Ozone vs Ionisers

Ozone vs Ionisers in Swimming Pool Technology. Understanding the Difference

The discussion around ozone and ioniser technology in swimming pools has become increasingly common in recent years, particularly as pool owners look for healthier, lower-chemical water treatment solutions. While both technologies aim to improve water quality and reduce chlorine consumption, they operate very differently and understanding those differences is important when choosing the right system for long-term pool health, safety and maintenance.

First Things First. No Healthy Residential Pool in Australia Should be Truly “Chlorine Free”

Before comparing technologies, it’s important to address one of the biggest misconceptions in the industry.
In Australia, it is highly recommended that residential swimming pools still use a minimum chlorine residual to remain safe and sanitary. Chlorine remains the only practical residual sanitiser that continues working throughout the entire body of pool water and plumbing system.

Claims suggesting a residential pool can operate completely chlorine-free while still remaining consistently safe and healthy are, at best, very bold statements and remain largely unproven under real-world conditions.

There are of course specialised “bio pools” or natural swimming pools that operate using large regeneration zones, aquatic plants and highly engineered natural filtration systems rather than traditional chemical sanitation. However, these are a completely different category of pool design, typically involving substantial space requirements, complex hydraulic design and significantly higher construction costs. They are not representative of the vast majority of residential swimming pools in Australia, where maintaining an appropriate chlorine residual remains the accepted and practical standard for safe water sanitation.

Alternative technologies such as ozone, ionisation, UV and AOP should be viewed as supplementary, or secondary purification systems that work alongside chlorine, not complete replacements for it.

The real goal is not eliminating chlorine entirely, but dramatically reducing chlorine demand while maintaining superior water quality.

Understanding Ioniser Technology

Ionisation systems typically work by introducing copper and silver ions into the pool water through sacrificial anodes or mineral electrodes.
• Copper is primarily used for algae control
• Silver has mild bacteriostatic properties

The challenge with silver, however, is speed.

Silver ions are an extremely slow acting sanitiser compared to modern oxidation technologies. While they may contribute to water balance over time, they do not provide the rapid oxidation capability required to quickly destroy organic contaminants, body oils, sunscreen residues, ammonia compounds and other waste introduced by swimmers. This is where ozone becomes significantly more powerful.

Ozone – One of the Most Powerful Oxidisers Available

Ozone (O₃) is an exceptionally strong oxidiser capable of breaking down contaminants at a far faster rate than traditional mineral systems.

Rather than relying on slow metal ion interaction, ozone aggressively attacks:
• Organic waste
• Chloramines
• Bacteria
• Viruses
• Biofilm
• Oils and contaminants

The result is cleaner, clearer, fresher water with significantly reduced chlorine demand.
Importantly, ozone does not leave heavy metals behind in the water and does not depend on sacrificial mineral rods that require periodic replacement.

Why Strong Ozone and Ionisers Can Become Counteractive

One of the more interesting discussions in the industry surrounds systems that combine ozone and ionisation together.
In theory, the combination sounds attractive. In practice, however, there is an important chemical consideration:
A sufficiently strong ozone system can oxidise copper and silver ions, effectively neutralising or reducing the benefit of the ioniser component.

This is because ozone is such a powerful oxidising agent that it can attack the very ions the system is trying to introduce into the water.

This is why many combined ozone/ioniser systems operate with relatively low ozone production levels.
For example, there are systems that proclaim ‘chlorine-free’ and utilise both ozone and ioniser technology simultaneously. In these types of setups, the ozone output is generally so mild that it does not aggressively oxidise the copper and silver ions being produced.

There are also ioniser systems that operate alongside an ‘oxidiser’. Essentially this is a small electrode (or commonly referred to as a salt chlorinator cell) used for electrolysis, or the production of chlorine.

By comparison, high-output twin cell ozone technologies such as the patented approach used by Brauer Swim, focus more heavily on powerful oxidation performance rather than relying on slow-acting heavy metal ions. These systems eliminate the smell, taste and feel of the chlorine, most commonly the chloramines, that create the sensations we associate with chlorine like red eyes, itchy and dry skin, strong smell.

The philosophy is different:
• Ionisers attempt to supplement sanitation using dissolved metals
• Advanced ozone systems focus on oxidation strength and chlorine reduction efficiency

Maintenance Differences Matter

Long-term maintenance is another major point of difference between the technologies.

Ioniser Systems

Ionisation systems rely on sacrificial electrodes or mineral rods or beads which gradually wear away and require replacement every few years at a few hundred dollars each time.

Over time this adds:
• Replacement costs
• Service requirements
• Potential staining risks if water chemistry drifts outside ideal ranges

Copper levels particularly must be carefully monitored to avoid:
• Surface staining
• Blonde hair discolouration
• Metal buildup

Ozone Systems

Ozone systems generally involve far lower ongoing consumable costs.

There are:
• No heavy metal rods
• No sacrificial anodes
• No copper or silver accumulation concerns

The ozone simply performs oxidation, reduces chlorine demand and then reverts back to oxygen.

In many cases this also creates a positive flow-on effect with overall pool chemistry:
• Lower chloramine production
• Reduced chemical demand
• Improved water clarity
• Softer water feel
• Reduced odour

Water Reuse and Environmental Benefits

Another positive shared by both ozone and ioniser systems is the ability to potentially reuse pool water for lawns and gardens, particularly in low salt environments.

Provided salt levels remain low enough and local council regulations are followed, water treated through either technology can often be repurposed for irrigation more effectively than traditional high-salt chlorinated pools.

This is becoming increasingly attractive as homeowners look for more environmentally conscious pool solutions. By adding a balance tank or backwash tank to further dilute this captured water is also a more efficient and economical use of the waste water.

The Future of Pool Water Treatment

There is no question that the swimming pool industry is moving toward advanced supplementary purification technologies that improve swimmer comfort while reducing chlorine reliance.

Both ionisation and ozone systems have a place in the market, and both can contribute positively when correctly implemented.
However, when comparing pure sanitising strength, oxidation capability, maintenance simplicity and long-term chemistry flexibility, ozone technology clearly offers several advantages, particularly when delivered through high-output systems specifically engineered to maximise oxidation efficiency.

At the end of the day, the healthiest pools are not necessarily the ones claiming to be “chemical free” or “chlorine free.” They are the pools that maintain safe sanitiser residuals while using advanced purification technologies to dramatically improve overall water quality.

And in that conversation, ozone continues to establish itself as one of the most effective tools available in modern pool water treatment.
